Fall Safety Tips for Pets

The fall season means cooler weather and a great outdoor environment. The vibrant colors and earthy smells are enough to drive anyone out of the house. Being outdoors is not something that only humans enjoy, pets also love the fall environment. This makes it the perfect time for taking long walks with your pet. Before you head out, there are some safety measures to consider.

Keeping Your Pet Warm

It is important to ensure that your furry companion is warm at all times. You must remember that the temperatures tend to drop fast during autumn. Don’t leave your pet outside for long periods especially during early morning and late evening. While there are animal breeds that can withstand cooler temperatures for longer, others don’t do so well. If your pet spends time out in the yard, keep a blanket on the porch to keep him or her warm.

Look Out for Mushrooms

Most animals like exploring and they will eat anything that looks edible to them. While most of the plants and fungi growing outside your house may be harmless, it pays to be cautious. Before allowing your pet to play outside, make sure that you inspect the area to ensure that it is free of wild mushrooms. The mushrooms can be highly toxic if ingested and can cause vomiting or even liver injury.

Watch Out for Wild Animals

Autumn is a season when many wild animals are out and about foraging for food. If you enjoy taking walks out in the woods, you are bound to encounter wild animals such as snakes, skunks, or even bears. Always remain alert to avoid getting in the path of venomous snakes or some other creature. Keep your pet close and where necessary use a leash when out in the woods.

Plants and Leaves

The fall season is synonymous with fallen leaves and plants all over the place. This means that your pet is likely to spend a considerable time playing in the leaves. This might seem harmless until you know that some of the plants may contain toxins that are harmful to your pet. Ingesting leaves can cause gastrointestinal upset. Learn how to identify plants, flowers, and trees that are poisonous to your pet. Do not allow your pet to chew on acorns and other fallen nuts.

Seasonal Allergies

Fall is a time when many pets can suffer from different allergic reactions. Mold, ragweed, and other allergens can cause your pet to sneeze, cough, or itch all the time. It may not be possible to know what is causing the reactions, but if you suspect allergies, talk to your vet. Having your pet tested will help to determine the best treatment plan.

Keep your pet safe even while indoors by keeping him or her away from certain items around the house such as rodenticide and antifreeze. Always protect your pets’ paws and check him or her thoroughly for ticks after returning from your long walks. Think about your pet’s nutrition needs during this fall. Remember that the increased activity level may call for an increase in calories. Talk to your vet in Arlignton at Dr. Mike's Affordable Vet Care about the best diet for your pet.
